The history of animation
In this essay I will be explaining how animation has moved on over time and what new types of animation are being created. I will talk about Rotoscoping, the history of Disney, clay- animation, CGI and anime.
Rotoscoping is a very interesting type of animation. For this method the animator uses live-action footage to create an animation, the animator projects the film onto a frosted glass panel and draws over it frame by frame to make it look like the cartoons are walking around in real life. A very good example of this is 'Betty Boop HA HA HA', this animation was released on the 2nd of March 1994.
The first animation directed by Walt Disney was Steamboat Willie, Steamboat Willie was animated by Ub Lwerks and Wilfred Jackson, The first ever screening was in July 1928 and the original theatrical release was November the 8th 1928 (Information found on Wikipedia, accessed 18th September 2011).
The type of animation used for this was Cel (Celluloid) animation. A Cel is a transparent sheet on which the cartoon is drawn on and then layered.
Steamboat Willie was one of the first cartoons to have synchronized sound which was a big thing back in the nineteen hundreds.
Personally Clay-animation is my favourite ways of animating because of what has been done with it, the way they hand crafted objects and made them move in such a smooth movement is amazing.
A good example of Clay-animation is morph, this is the first animation created by Aardman, It was created in 1977.
Clay-Animation films were produced in the United States as early as 1908.
Wallace and Gromit is the most recent clay-animation made by Aardman and they are known all around the world because of its success, the first ever Wallace and Gromit 'A Grand Day Out' was broadcasted on 25th of December 1989, it was broadcasted by the
BBC (information from Wikipedia accessed 18th September 2011). .

The most recent Wallace and Gromit short film is 'Wallace and Gromit a Matter of Loaf and Death' the recording for this started in January 2008 and was released on the 25th of December 2008.
CGI (computer-generated imagery) is a 3D way of animation, it is made to look as realistic as possible. A good example of a whole film made using CGI, it is called 'Final Fantasy The Spirits Within', this film lasted approximately 102 minutes, released in 2001.
CGI is also used to create special effects for movie's such as monsters, explosions and huge objects (spaceships). There is also art made using CGI.
Anime is a Japanese styled art dating back to 1917 but it was not popular or even known by anyone outside of Japan in the 1980's. The characteristic style of anime was developed in the 1960's by Osama Tezuka (information found on Wikipedia, accessed 18th September 2011). Manga is a very well known type of anime in Japan and is often copied by the United States making cartoon for their language.
Stop frame animation is a very interesting type of animation, it is a string of pictures taken with an object moving slightly each frame, this is a simple animation using coins that are moving around by themselves.
Stop frame was also used for cartoon animation back before computers because it was the most simple way of making animations. There are also cartoons still made these days using stop frame animation.
What the animator has done is made the cartoons change between objects and creatures.

Overall animation has moved on a lot over the years and it has been made more advanced in different ways particularly with the use of computers.
